Kalimah H. Ahmad, Esq. currently serves as Legal Advisor to the Hudson County Correction Facility in NJ and is a former Assistant County Counsel for the County of Hudson. In 2011, she was appointed and served as Jersey City Councilwoman-at-Large by former Mayor Jerramiah Healy. Ms. Ahmad is the former Board Member and Regional Director of the Garden State Bar Association and currently serves as a Board Trustee for the Educational Arts Team. In 2011 she joined forces with State Senator Sandra Cunningham to conduct free expungement seminars for the public.
Ms. Ahmad attended Montclair State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in English and Teacher Education Certification as a Dean’s List student. She went on to receive her Juris Doctorate in May 2005 from Seton Hall University School of Law. During her tenure at Seton Hall Law, Ms. Ahmad was a three-time recipient of the Hudson County Bar Association’s Scholarship Award (2002, 2003, 2004) and authored a review of New Jersey’s Criminal Sentencing policy in a publication titled, “Where Have All My Brothers Gone?: An Exploration of New Jersey’s 1000-Foot of a School Zone Statute.”
Ms. Ahmad developed her legal experience as an Associate at the law firm of Hunt, Hamlin & Ridley. She was a member of the legal team for U.S. President Barack Obama during the Pennsylvania Primary; Newark Mayor Cory Booker; Hudson County Freeholder Jeff Dublin; former Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and many other officials during their elections. She was formerly employed by Jersey City Housing Authority (JCHA) as Youth Opportunities Coordinator; Merrill Lynch as a Client Associate; and at Sony’s Urban World Films NY as legal intern. While working for the JCHA, Ms. Ahmad was the recipient of an award from the Jersey City Tenant Affairs Board for her “Outstanding Service to the Youth of Public Housing.” She also served as intern to the late Honorable Shirley Tolentino, J.S.C., in the Hudson County Superior Court, Criminal Division.
Ms. Ahmad is the recipient of the Garden State Bar Association’s 2011 Young Lawyer Award and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity’s 2011 Woman of the Year Award. She is a member of various organizations including the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA), Garden State Bar Association (GSBA), Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey (ABWL-NJ) and the Black Entertainment and Sports Law Association (BESLA).
In June 2009 she trained for a cure to benefit the Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS) by competing in the Franklin Lakes New Jersey Annual Triathlon (1/2 mile swim, 17 mile bike, 5 mile run). Since July of 2010 she has volunteered and joined efforts with the organization “More Than A Race” to raise funds to send 60 inner-city, at-risk youth on a 3-day camping retreat at Camp Linwood-McDonald located near the Delaware Water Gap. She now serves on the Board for that organization.
